In 2008 this club funded the Scholarship Fund for the Ophelia Project

The Ophelia Project is a national nonprofit organization.  The desert’s chapter is a service of the Healthy Family Foundation which brings together girls from Indio Middle and Indio High schools with volunteers consisting of successful women dedicated to helping adolescent girls in the Coachella Valley.  By participating in planned activities with these volunteer mentor “role models”, teens are assisted with setting goals for their future and guided away from at-risk environments.  The objective is to encourage young girls to develop hope for their future and to acquire the skills necessary to make their dreams a reality.

           The Ophelia Project addresses issues young women face and provides educational and skill-building opportunities through programs aimed at increasing self-esteem, enhancing decision-making and coping skills, identifying career/educational opportunities and building community awareness.  The program, which meets twice a month, and host activities involving getting into college, resume preparation, interviewing, healthy relationships, abuse, working women and college campus tours throughout the school year hopes to expand its program to other schools in the valley.

         Soroptimist  members are providing volunteers from its membership to participate in these programs, as well as, providing much needed monetary  funds.
